(MIAMI, FL) – Hundreds of fathers and their children gathered in Miami Gardens earlier this month to celebrate “Back to School with Dad,” an event co-sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan and the Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD). This daylong free event honored fathers of children who are enrolled in the County’s Head Start/Early Head Start program.
“This event was a confidence builder for youngsters,” Commissioner Jordan said. “It was a great motivator for them to excel this school year.”
Landmark Aviation donated 500 book bags, which were filled with school supplies such as composition books, crayons, notebook paper, rulers, pencils and pens. School-aged children received free uniforms, while younger students enrolled in HS/EHS were given new outfits. Every child and their father left the event with a library card, and all dads received special T-shirts and discount prescription cards for their families. Children were also treated to enriching activities that promoted education, health and safety, arts and crafts, face painting, and storytelling.
“This was the first of many events to celebrate and support the involvement of men in the school readiness of their children,” said CAHSD Director Lucia Davis-Raiford, who oversees the early education and supportive services program for families residing in underserved communities. “Dads are important in children’s lives, and I am inspired by the commitment of so many of our Head Start fathers.”
The Back to School with Dad event was sponsored by Walmart; Miami Heat; Holtz Children’s Hospital; Jackson Memorial Hospital; University of Miami; Miami-Dade County Department of Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces; Miami-Dade Animal Services; Miami-Dade Police; Miami-Dade Fire Rescue; Miami-Dade Elections; City of Miami Gardens Police; Miami-Dade Public Libraries; CareerSource; The Links; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and Scholastic.
