Six hundred of Miami-Dade County’s youngest football players competed last Saturday, October 2, at the Fourth Annual “Rolle Bowl,” held at the National Football League (NFL)/Youth Education Town (YET) Center at Gwen Cherry Park. The “Rolle Bowl,” hosted each year by County Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle, is a friendly competition of Pop Warner football between boys ages 5 to 16. Normally, both teams are from Commissioner Rolle’s district, but this year’s competition included teams from Gwen Cherry Park and the Palmetto Bay Boys & Girls Club.

After games between the different weight classes, Commissioner Rolle presented each organization with a $5,000 donation form his office funds. He also presented trophies to the winning teams, most valuable players and most spirited cheerleaders from each team. Gwen Cherry Park won five of the seven games with one ending in a tie. Over 800 people attended this year’s special “football classic,” which Commissioner Rolle says gets better every year with more parks asking to participate. Next year’s competition will be held in October 2005.

“Throughout the event, the young men showed excellent sportsmanship and were great team players,” said Commissioner Rolle. “It’s important that we continue these types of relationship- and confidence-building events for our youth.”
