Thousands ready for school after Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle’s Annual Book Bag Giveaway

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
More than 2,000 students started this school year prepared, thanks to District 2 Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle. The commissioner held his Annual Book Bag Giveaway at Gwen Cherry Park on August 22, 2009, where underprivileged children and their parents came to receive free book bags and school supplies. In addition to the annual giveaway, Commissioner Rolle pushed for total school preparation this year by adding a free health fair for all attendees. Screenings for dental, vision, and blood pressure were available to residents, as well as immunizations for children heading back to school. Various businesses and organizations related to health, safety, child care, food and nutrition, employment, and education offered a wealth of information on staying fit, healthy, and happy.

For this event, Commissioner Rolle partnered with The Bryan Pata Foundation, named for the University of Miami football player and Miami local who was murdered in 2006.

“There are many disadvantaged families living in my district, which is why I organize this event every year. All students in Miami-Dade deserve the opportunity to have a healthy and successful academic experience,” said Commissioner Rolle. “This event was a tremendous success thanks to the efforts of the County and local organizations who came together to provide free services and information to families who need it most.”

But it wasn’t just all business for children attending the event. Bounce houses, rock climbing walls, face painting, clowns, train rides, and free food made the day fun and exciting for kids and their parents.
