(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Jean Monestime was honored at the Seniors Are First Black History Month event on Monday, February 28, 2011 at the Miami Beach Public Library. Commissioner Monestime was recognized for being the first Haitian-American elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission and was accompanied to the event by seniors from Covenant Palms Homes and Little River Plaza. Commissioner Monestime thanked the seniors for their courage, sacrifice and perseverance to many causes that he holds dear to his heart.
Seniors Are First, Inc. is a non-profit organization which concentrates on improving the quality of life for seniors living in Miami Beach. Its members meet regularly, and the seniors remain active in their community by attending social functions and volunteering. The oldest member is 96.
