Commissioner Jean Monestime Distributes 1,700 Book Bags at Back-To-School Events

Commissioner Jean Monestime, District 2, distributed 1,700 book bags to students in District 2 during his 2012 Back-To-School Book Bag Giveaways.

The back-to-school events were held on Saturday, August 4, at Gwen Cherry Park, 7090 NW 22nd Avenue, and on Sunday, August 5, at Oak Grove Park, 690 NE 159th Street.

"Education unlocks a world of opportunity for our youth," said Commissioner Monestime. "I want to encourage our children as much as possible to excel in school and I want them to be prepared for the upcoming school year."

A legal clinic was presented by the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association at the Gwen Cherry Park event. Blood pressure screenings were provided by the Jessie Trice Community Health Center and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department at Gwen Cherry Park and Oak Grove Park respectively.

Families also enjoyed music, bounce houses, free snow cones, and popcorn at both events.
