'You Can Go to College' series concludes with workshop and awards ceremony at University of Miami

(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- More than 150 college-bound students were encouraged to work hard and accomplish their dreams at Commissioner Jean Monestime’s final “You Can Go to College” workshop and awards ceremony held at the University of Miami on May 16, 2013.

This was the capstone event to Commissioner Monestime’s college workshop series which began in 2012 with the goal of educating students and parents about the process of getting into college and succeeding in higher education. The workshops, which were held in District 2, covered such topics as “Getting to College” and “Paying for College.” The final workshop was titled “Transitioning to College.” Workshop participants met with college admissions advisors, financial aid officers, student mentors and inspirational college graduates.

After the final workshop at the University of Miami, College Summit held the Darden and Deloitte Awards Ceremony and luncheon which celebrated outstanding student leaders. Commissioner Monestime delivered the keynote address. Dignitaries such as State Rep. Kionne McGhee, Miami-Dade County School Board members Dr. Dorothy Bendross Mindingall, Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway and Dr. Larry Feldman were also in attendance.

“This series of workshops was a tremendous success and it’s only fitting that the final event highlights the achievement of outstanding students,” Commissioner Monestime said. “My goal with this workshop series was to give students and parents the tools they need to successfully and confidently navigate the college admissions process.”
