Miami-Dade County identifies $126 million for new sewer pipes with the sponsorship of Commissioner Monestime

(Miami-Dade, Florida) -  On Tuesday, June 3, 2014 the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Monestime to set aside $126 million for sewer expansion in business and industrial corridors lacking reasonable access to sewer service.  These areas, many of which are along important commercial areas within District 2 (including NW 7th Avenue, NW 22nd Avenue, NW 27th Avenue, and industrial properties within the “Green Technology Corridor”) have been constrained from either expanding or attracting new businesses because they require sewer connections.

“A major reason these areas struggle to create jobs and attract businesses is not for lack of trying – it really is because many businesses cannot come to these areas or expand their operations even when they want to,” explained Commissioner Monestime. “My resolution will eliminate this economic disparity and finally give these areas an opportunity to compete for jobs and attract business growth.”

Prior to Commissioner Monestime’s effort to assess and fix this disparity, the County’s estimated $12 billion Water and Sewer capital campaign did not include any new sewer expansion plans.  This resolution will go a long way to fixing a problem that has held back the economic potential for these business corridors for more than 50 years.  “Without the County making this basic infrastructure investment, these commercial areas will likely be left behind without an opportunity to grow for another 50 years,” offered Commissioner Monestime. “The Commission understood how important this issue was for the economic vitality of our community and the entire County and I am grateful for their support.”
