Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson helps deliver more than 39,000 pounds of food to Haiti

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
On June 9, Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson helped see off more than 39,000 pounds of rice, canned vegetables, baby food, and other goods for the people of Haiti to alleviate a chronic food shortage. The food came as the result of a two-week collection, co-sponsored by Commissioner Edmonson and Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan, that urged Miami-Dade County residents to donate non-perishable items at various drop off points in the county, including Commissioner Edmonson's district office.

"Lending a hand and providing assistance to friends has always been one of the guiding principles of our county," said Commissioner Edmonson. "We know what it feels like to be on the receiving end, especially when disaster occurs."

Donations poured in from residents, with a substantial amount coming from students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary School. World Vision, a non-profit agency that provides aid to some of the world's poorest nations, collected $5,000 from residents for the relief effort, and doubled their match, with monetary donations totaling $15,000. The pallets will be given to Food for the Poor, another non-profit organization, who will deliver the food to the island for distribution.
