Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson promotes pedestrian safety at WalkSafe event

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson marched with some of Miami-Dade County’s smallest pedestrians – the students of Miami Shores Elementary – on Wednesday, October 8 to promote the WalkSafe and International Walk to School Day programs. All 700 students learned how to be more aware of their surroundings, look twice before crossing the street and to pay attention to traffic signals.

The WalkSafe program was developed by the University of Miami in order to address and prevent the number of fatalities and injuries due to children being hit by cars. More than 2,500 schools in the United States are participating in International Walk to School Day (iWALK). WalkSafe implements a three-day pedestrian safety curriculum in Miami-Dade Public Schools during the week of iWALK. Commissioner Edmonson spoke to the students and parents of Miami Shores Elementary about pedestrian safety.

“The message is two-fold: drivers need to focus on the road and not be distracted by cell phones and other items, and children need to be taught how to walk safely in their neighborhoods and pay attention to road signs and cars,” said Commissioner Edmonson. “I’m very proud of the students and faculty at Miami Shores Elementary School for participating in the WalkSafe program.”

The number of children hit by cars in District 3, the commissioner’s district, is triple the county’s average.

The WalkSafe program works with Miami-Dade Public Schools, Public Works Department, Miami-Dade Police Department, and other community partners and agencies to educate residents about pedestrian safety, and decrease the number of childhood pedestrian-related injuries and deaths.
