(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- The skies were dark and threatened rain on Saturday, August 15, 2009, but that did not stop Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson from distributing 2,354 free book bags at Olinda Park to children preparing for school. The giveaway was part of the commissioner’s 3rd Annual Back to School Fun Day, which also included fun children’s activities such as bounce houses, music, and other entertainment, in addition to free food.
Commissioner Edmonson partnered with local businesses to organize the event, which provides much relief for families who may have difficulty purchasing school supplies every year for their children.
“Knowing the current economic strains many families are living under, it is very important for me that children in my district are able to start the school year fresh. In addition to a brand new backpack, the children also found essential school supplies in their bags,” said Commissioner Edmonson.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools opened this past Monday, August 24.
