Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson denounces burglary at local church, urges community to report information to authorities

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
A recent crime at a community church in District 3 prompted Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson to speak at a press conference in an effort to find those responsible. On August 28, 2009, Commissioner Edmonson, along with Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle and Miami Police Chief John Timoney, spoke at the Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Liberty City. This past Monday, a group of ushers having a meeting at the church were burglarized when an unknown robber wielding a gun ordered them to relinquish everything in their pockets. The burglar then stole the car of the church’s senior pastor to escape.

“This [crime] is outrageous and totally unacceptable,” stated Commissioner Edmonson at the press conference. “It will even be more offensive and hurtful if we, as a community, do not act in denouncing the perpetrators who continue to create havoc in our neighborhoods.”

Commissioner Edmonson then distributed “Hot Spot” cards, a campaign she launched in December of last year allowing residents to anonymously report suspicious and illegal activities in their neighborhoods. The pre-paid postcard can be filled out and dropped in any mail box; tips are forwarded to the police without the fear of retaliation. Hot Spot cards are available at Commissioner Edmonson’s district office at the Joseph Caleb Center, 5400 NW 22 Avenue, Suite 701, in Miami, most community churches and libraries.

“For the sake of our children, we must help ourselves by removing the criminal elements from our community,” said Commissioner Edmonson.
