Almost 2,500 students receive free book bags at Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson’s 4th Annual Back-to-School Fun Day

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
The line stretched around the park as thousands of children and their parents lined up to receive free book bags and school supplies thanks to Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson at her 4th Annual Back-to-School Fun Day on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Olinda Park.

The commissioner and volunteers distributed close to 2,500 book bags filled with school supplies to students in grades k-12 The event was targeted toward families that may not be able to afford book bags and supplies for the upcoming school year. In addition, the Miami-Dade County Health Department, Jackson Hospital Systems and other health care entities provided free vaccinations for back-to-school as well as free health screenings such as blood pressure and glucose.  The children also enjoyed a variety of free food, music, games, raffles and prizes provided by donors.

"I think most parents are a little overwhelmed when they receive their child's school supply list and realize that the costs add up quickly," said Commissioner Edmonson. "Parents then struggle with being able to afford the supplies and wanting their child to be well prepared for school. This event takes some of that burden away, while allowing the children to enjoy the final days of summer."
