Commissioners Joe A. Martinez and Audrey M. Edmonson accept the Oath of Office as Miami-Dade County Chairman and Vice Chairwoman

Surrounded by family and friends, Commissioners Joe A. Martinez and Audrey M. Edmonson were sworn in during a brief installation ceremony as Chairman and Vice Chairwoman of the Board of County Commissioners.  The Honorable Judge Israel Reyes administered the Oath of Office for Chairman Martinez and the Honorable Judge Karen Mills Francis administered the Oath of Office for Vice Chairwoman Edmonson. The ceremony was held on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street, at 10 a.m.

"We, in Miami-Dade County government, are undergoing unprecedented political and economic times; nevertheless, I have faith that during my tenure as Chairman I can help shape our county towards the road to recovery," said Chairman Martinez. "I express my gratitude to my family, my staff, my District 11 constituents and my colleagues for their continued support."

During the installation ceremony Chairman Martinez flattered Chairwoman Edmonson with a dozen pink roses as a gesture of solidarity.

"I would not be here today without the residents of District 3 and I thank you for allowing me to represent you," Vice Chairwoman Edmonson said. "We serve at the pleasure of all the residents of Miami-Dade County.  I have heard the outcry for a democratic process, I have heard the outcry for fiscal responsibility, and I've heard the outcry for economic development and job creation in our communities. I understand the need for inclusion and will work to break down and remove the silos of disparity. I promise to always do my best to live up to your expectations, to make tough decisions on your behalf and to lead with the utmost integrity."

Both Chairman Martinez and Vice Chairwoman Edmonson were elected by their peers on November 16, 2010 to serve two-year terms until the end of 2012. As Chairman, Martinez presides over the meetings of the Board of County Commissioners, Miami-Dade's legislative branch. In 2004, Commissioner Martinez was the first Hispanic in the 60 years of Miami-Dade County government to serve as a County Commission Chairman and the first Commissioner to have been elected twice by his peers as the Chairman of the Board.
