Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson meets with distinguished Malawi visitors


Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson and members of the Miami-Dade Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) welcomed distinguished visitors from the Republic of Malawi, Africa on April 1, 2011 at the Stephen P. Clark Center in Downtown Miami.  The meeting was part of Miami-Dade County’s long involvement in working to strengthen trade and cultural ties with the continent of Africa.

In attendance were Jimmy Nares, Assistant Director of OEDIT; Anthony D. Okonmah, Fred Oladeinde, and Sonny Wright from the Foundation for Democracy in Africa; Patrick Mphepo, First Secretary of Trade & Investment, Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in the U.S. ,and H.E. Jane Nankwenya, Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Malawi in the U.S.

The group discussed a number of topics, including the U.S. government’s Africa Growth and Opportunity Act of 2000 (AGOA), which offers tangible incentives for African countries to continue their efforts to open their economies and build free markets. In addition, they spoke on the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) approval of $350.7 million compact with the Government of Malawi to revitalize Malawi’s power sector.  The compact may also provide U.S. companies with the opportunities to do business in Malawi.
