Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson cut the ribbon on the newly-renovated St. John Apartments at 1300 N.W. 2nd Avenue in Overtown on April 5, 2012. The affordable rental apartment building is the St. John Community Development Corp.'s (SJCDC) first project completed through the Miami-Dade Neighborhood Stabilization Program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Additional funds were supplied by the HOME and Surtax programs by Miami-Dade County.  Joining Vice Chairwoman Edmonson were State Representative Cynthia Stafford, Bishop James Adams of St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, SJCDC Chairman of the Board, Dr. Nelson L. Adams III, SJCDC President and CEO Ola Aluko, and other SJCDC board members.

"This is another example of what can be accomplished through public-private partnerships. This is just the first phase of the partnership between Miami-Dade County and St. John's CDC," said Vice Chairwoman Edmonson.  "I am especially happy that thirteen families will be calling these apartments home.  We need more projects like this to restore decent affordable housing, and to help to revitalize the Overtown community.  With the support of Miami-Dade County Surtax and HOME dollars, the total project will provide 35 affordable housing units that are much needed in the area."
