Statement from Vice Chairwoman Edmonson on Memorial Day weekend safety

"Memorial Day is a set-aside time to remember the men and women that died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Because of them, the nation is a safer place. It is also a time of great celebration with family and friends. I encourage everyone to safely and responsibly celebrate.

"It has come to my attention that there will be a heavy police presence on Miami Beach. I have been assured this presence is for the safety of all our residents and visitors. I have personally spoken with the Mayor Mattie Bower of Miami Beach and Director James Loftus of the Miami-Dade County Police Department regarding rumors and perceptions of racial profiling. They have assured me that the safeguards are only in place to make sure that there is orderly conduct and a smooth flow of traffic.

"I am hopeful that they are sincere in their words and commitments to our community."
