Miami FL - Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson joined the Miami HEAT, Florida Blue, Sun Sports and the American Red Cross to host the 13th Annual HEAT April Pool’s Day on Tuesday, April 1st at Gibson Park Pool located at 401 N.W. 12th Street, Miami, Florida 33136. The event launched the HEAT’s summer long “Learn to Swim” community swim safety campaign and officially kicked off the swim season in South Florida. HEAT players Toney Douglas and Rashard Lewis, along with the HEAT Dancers, got into the pool with children from Dunbar K-8 Center and Riverside Elementary HEAT Academies for a special swimming lesson under the direction and supervision of American Red Cross’ certified water safety instructors and lifeguards. Based on the most current statistics from the Florida Department of Health, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of four and is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of seventeen. From 2010-2012, Broward County ranks first in the state of Florida in unintentional drowning death, while Miami-Dade County ranks second.
