Commissioner Edmonson’s statement to the School Board regarding renaming of Allapattah Middle School to honor Georgia Jones-Ayers

(MIAMI, FL) – The following is Miami-Dade County District 3 Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson’s June 17, 2015 statement to the Miami-Dade School Board regarding the renaming of Allapattah Middle School in honor of Georgia Jones-Ayers:

“I am full of pride that before this body today is the proposed renaming of Allapattah Middle School in honor of the late Georgia Jones-Ayers. Georgia Ayers was a pioneer, fighter and stalwart supporter of Miami-Dade County’s most precious resource. We remain grateful for her intervention in the lives of troubled youth. She made a tremendous impact in helping our children find the right path. To name a school in my County Commission district in her honor is very befitting. Education was very important to Georgia Ayers. She once inspired me to further my own educational goals. She believed education was the great equalizing factor that couldn’t be stripped away from you. In her mind, it was the most important step toward leveling the playing field. I applaud the efforts of School Board Member Dorothy Bendross Mindingall for her diligence and leadership in moving this recommendation forward, and I urge the Miami-Dade Public School Board members to fully support these efforts on behalf of the residents of Miami-Dade County.”
