Commissioner Edmonson’s statement on the MLK event shootings

MIAMI – “Triumph in the midst of an oppressive time is what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached and taught about in his sermons. Yesterday, instead of triumph, tragedy struck our community again, leaving it shattered. Senseless gun violence at any time is absurd, but senseless violence in the midst of a celebration is particularly absurd,” said Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson.

“I cannot say it enough: this violence has to end. The Dr. Martin Luther King Parade and Festivities Committee along with Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami tirelessly worked to bring about excitement and good cheer to the residents of Miami-Dade County, especially our children, with floats, marching bands and even a junkanoo band. To end the festivities with gun violence is a dishonor to the memory of our country’s most well-known peaceful freedom fighter and leaves a blemish on our community.”
