Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon to honor Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler with street unveiling ceremony

MIAMI-DADE – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Keon Hardemon will honor Commissioner Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler with a street unveiling ceremony on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. at the Joseph Caleb Center, 5400 NW 22nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33142. A portion of Northwest 22nd Avenue between State Road 112 and Northwest 79th Street will be co-designated as “Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler Boulevard” to acknowledge the well-respected educator and politician who blazed trails as a public servant in Miami-Dade County.

Commissioner Dr. Carey-Shuler became the first African American woman to serve on the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners and the first African American woman to hold the position of Chairwoman of the Board. Her service, which began in the 1980s, includes efforts to rebuild Liberty City in the aftermath of the McDuffie Riots, and restoration of The Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown. Dr. Carey-Shuler sponsored Florida’s Affordable Housing Surtax Program, which has provided a funding source for affordable housing assistance to thousands of low-and-moderate income Miami-Dade County residents.
