Commissioner Sally A. Heyman helps District 4 students prepare for school with annual backpack distribution

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
For the third year, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, District 4, joined with Office Depot Foundation and the National Foundation for Women Legislators in distributing hundreds of back-to-school backpacks to children living in District 4.  More than 375 children attending local public and private elementary schools received these packs that contained essential school supplies including pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, glue sticks, rulers, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, paper, notebooks, and folders.

"Each year I look forward to providing some of the children in my district with these essential supplies prior to the beginning of the school year," said Commissioner Heyman.  "I hope this in some small way encourages them to apply themselves to their studies."

Commissioner Heyman joined her staff in distributing these backpacks to the selected students that will be attending elementary schools within District 4 prior to the commencement of the 2009-10 school year.  Recipients were selected through a random raffle Commissioner Heyman held through each school. Participating schools included: Aventura Charter School (ACES), Aventura Waterways K-8 Center, David Lawrence Jr. K-8, Sabal Palm Elementary, Greynolds Park Elementary, OJUS Elementary, Ruth K. Broad - BHI K-8, Sunny Isles Beach K-8 Center, Treasure Island Elementary, VAB Highland Oaks Elementary, BTAY Day School, St. Lawrence, Church by the Sea, and Fulford Church.

This latest event is part of Commissioner Heyman's ongoing effort to reach out to children and families in District 4 "bringing government closer to the people".  Other events the Commissioner participates in that involve children and families include:  Reading to children at local libraries and schools; a holiday turkey and bike give-away; sponsoring local field trips to Fairchild Tropical Garden and an annual book collection and distribution event, among others.
