Colossal kites to fill sky at 18th Annual Kite Festival

Commissioner Sally A. Heyman is inviting residents in District 4 to watch sea creatures and other whimsical objects float through the sky at the 18th Annual Kite Festival at Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Avenue, on Sunday, February 20, 2011. The festival, from noon to 5 p.m., will feature world-renowned kite-makers and their mega-fliers, like Peter Lynn of New Zealand's 100-foot squid and Martin Lester of the United Kingdom's 30-foot scuba man.

Spectators can also enjoy music, food, competitions, and activities throughout the day. Prizes will be awarded to residents who bring the best homemade kites, highest flying kites, prettiest kites and kites with the longest tails. Kites will also be available for purchase, starting at $5. Participating food vendors include Haulover Park's own dockside restaurant Café Azul, The Roasted Corn, Jefe's Original Gourmet and Dolci Peccati Gelato. Everyone is invited to bring their blankets and have a picnic while watching the most spectacular kits soar through the sky.

Festival admission is FREE. Parking is $6. For directions and further information about the Kite Festival at Haulover Park call Skyward Kites at 305-893-0906, or Haulover Park, 305-947-3525.
