Commissioner Sally A. Heyman participates in groundbreaking for Northeast Branch Library

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman recently joined Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, Library Director Raymond Santiago, the City of Aventura elected officials and staff to break ground on the new Northeast Branch Library.

“I am happy to be breaking ground for the new and long awaited Northeast Regional Library,” said Commissioner Heyman.  “I want to thank the residents for their patience during this process, and the City of Aventura for facilitating a satellite library at their City Hall building.”

The new building will be constructed on the site of the previous facility which was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and later demolished.  At more than 26,000 square feet, the library will include an exterior covered deck, vestibule, two courtyards, a 100-seat auditorium, two conference rooms, a coffee shop and separate reading rooms for adults, young adults and children.  The design will allow the library to offer an educational way to view and experience the natural landscape. The pathways and plaza will be located around an enhanced retention pond which will contain native plants and wildlife. The green areas will be used to educate the public about their natural ecosystems, native plant material, wildlife, captured rainwater, and the principles of a Florida-Friendly Landscape, now part of the Miami-Dade County Landscape Ordinance.
