Commissioner Eileen Higgins and World Central Kitchen work together to deliver meals to seniors in District 5
MIAMI-DADE – Tomorrow, February 25, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, District 5, and World Central Kitchen (WCK), will deliver hot meals to residents living in senior buildings in Little Havana. This event is a continuation of the month-long collaboration between Commissioner Higgins and WCK, bringing WCK’s #ChefsForAmerica nationwide emergency food relief program to District 5.
WCK’s mission is to use the power of food to heal communities and strengthen economies in times of crisis and beyond. They have been at the forefront of the fight against hunger for over a decade, and during the COVID-19 pandemic they have provided meals to children, families, and seniors in communities that need support. Through their Restaurants for the People program, they have worked closely with the restaurant industry, which has been detrimentally affected by this crisis, by providing jobs for their staff and drivers who need to earn a living while producing meals for their neighborhoods in need. To date, WCK has purchased over 12 million meals nationally from local restaurants through this initiative.
Throughout February, Commissioner Higgins and WCK have worked together to bring meals prepared by local restaurants affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to District 5 residents in need. At Thursday’s event, meals will be provided by El Cristo Restaurant & Catering, located in Little Havana. By the close of February, Commissioner Higgins and WCK will have distributed 3,640 meals in District 5.
