Commissioner Eileen Higgins to host open house on the progress of the Government Center Neighborhood Visioning Study

MIAMI-DADE – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, District 5, will host an open house on Thursday, March 25 from 3 to 7 p.m. with downtown stakeholders on the progress of the Government Center Neighborhood Visioning Study. Commissioner Higgins will be joined by County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava at a media availability to be held at 4:00 p.m.

In 2019, Commissioner Higgins received the support of her colleagues on the Board of County Commissioners in directing the administration to conduct a visioning study to determine the optimum mix of development within the Government Center Rapid Transit Sub-Zone “RTZ” to revitalize the area. Since then, Commissioner Higgins hosted a visioning workshop where residents and stakeholders shared their vision about the area around Government Center. Additionally, she visited graduate students in the FIU Department of Architecture to hear their presentations on a creative vision for the urban core and met with neighbors, business owners, and community stakeholders.

Now, nearly two years into this process, this open house will showcase how the public input and ideas have been incorporated into the visioning plans for a modern urban center.

“My goal is for Downtown Miami to serve as a model for urban communities that are walkable, green, and resilient. A true neighborhood where everyone, from young adults to families with kids, can afford to live,” said Commissioner Higgins. “I’m excited for the community to see the progress that’s been made and to show that we’re moving forward on this once-in-a-lifetime plan.”

The presentation will be played throughout the entire event, so attendees may come and go when convenient. Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced.
