Commissioner Higgins to make a special announcement regarding a new ADA accessible oceanside park and first-ever access bridge with viewing platform in South Florida
MIAMI-DADE – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, District 5, will be joined by City of Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman Rodney Barreto, Founder of the Sabrina Cohen Foundation Sabrina Cohen, representatives of the travel and tourism industry, and community stakeholders for an exciting announcement on the progress of the Adaptive Oceanside Park and Recreation Center in Miami Beach. The press conference will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 23, at 5301 Collins Ave., in Miami Beach.
Since 2016, the Sabrina Cohen Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing adaptive fitness and recreational programs that provide a better quality of life for individuals living with paralysis and various disabilities, has hosted bimonthly beach days for those living with disabilities to safely enjoy the beach. To date, over 8,000 participants from Miami-Dade County and across the world have attended. The Foundation is now also working to bring to life an Adaptive Fitness and Recreation Center that will offer physical fitness programs, a robotics and technology center and daily activities that promote mental and spiritual wellness. The oceanside park will be directly in front of the Center and will add to its offerings.
With funds from the Office of Commissioner Higgins and the contribution of land from the City of Miami Beach, South Florida’s first permanent, accessible beach is now a reality. Phase 1 will include the construction of an oceanside park which features an adaptive playground, fitness area, relaxation space, butterfly garden and permanent access to the beach, giving residents and visitors in wheelchairs or with any sort of physical or mental disability the opportunity to experience the beauty of the beach all year long. Phase 2 includes the construction of the adjacent Adaptive Recreation Center.
Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced.
