Miami-Dade Commissioner for District 5, Bruno A. Barreiro presented a Mom & Pop Small Business grant to Octavio Gallardo, co-owner of El Nuevo Siglo Supermarket located in the heart of Little Havana at 1305 SW 8 Street, Miami on September 11, 2007.
Octavio Gallardo and Pedro Jaime have owned el Nuevo Siglo for more than nine years. “When we purchased the business it was a small disorganized grocery store,” said Gallardo. “Today, we are proud to feature an extensive selection of grocery items from all over Latin America along with great Cuban food, wines and bakery items.”
The cute small Mom & Pop grocery store is a great place to shop for food, sip a cup of wine and buy desserts. In the back, the store is equipped with a French style bakery. As you enter the store on the right, you will see the restaurant where you can order “ropa vieja,” and other Cuban delights. In 2001, Miami NewTimes highlighted El Nuevo Siglo for having the “best Cuban sandwich in town” (http://bestof.miaminewtimes.com/bestof/award.php?award=15510.
“I am honored to receive this grant,” said Gallardo. Small business owners don’t have the cash flow big business have and the grant should help us do more for our customers.”
