(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade Board of County Commission Chairman Bruno A. Barreiro (Commissioner for District 5), Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower inspected eroded beach areas around the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach on April 21.
Chairman Barreiro has been working closely with Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen who has requested a federal appropriation of $7.5 million dollars for a County wide beach erosion control project. Together, they have hosted several meetings between members of the South Florida Congressional Delegation, Miami-Dade County and Miami Beach officials and the US Army Corps of Engineers to discuss beach re-nourishment.
"It is important to continue our efforts to ensure we don't lose additional sand," said Miami-Dade Chairman Bruno A. Barreiro. "I'd like to see a resolution to this problem as we can't continue to spend money re-nourishing our beaches."
In February, a Coastal Assessment of the Central Miami Beach Erosion Control Breakwaters informational meeting was held at the Miami Beach Police Department. During the meeting the County's Department of Environmental Resource Management announced the selection of the Florida Institute of Technology to conduct a study concerning the beach erosion control structures. In April the team will be presenting their first draft to DERM for comment and then it will be presented to the community via a public meeting.
