(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Rebeca Sosa is partnering with the Miami-Dade County Health Department to offer the "Annual Flu and Pneumonia Vaccination Drive" for County residents. Children from 6 months and up are eligible to receive immunizations, which will be administered at the Miami Springs Country Club, 650 Curtiss Parkway, in Miami Springs on Thursday, October 1, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Residents who fall within the highest risk groups for contracting the flu and pneumonia - those 6 months to 18 years and 65 and older - will receive the shots for free. Those 19 thru 64-years-old will be charged a nominal fee of $25.00 for the flu shot and $35.00 for the pneumonia shot.
The flu can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. Since the virus mutates, experts recommend getting vaccinated every year to have the latest protection against newer strains that may be circulating.
"If we have the means to protect people from this contagious and debilitating illness, then we need to use them," said Commissioner Sosa. "Studies show that flu-related deaths occur most frequently in the oldest and youngest populations, which is why we are making this vaccine available to everyone."
