Commissioner Rebeca Sosa will welcome the first Miami-Dade County Hospital Governance Taskforce meeting to be held on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. at the Beacon Council - 80 SW 8th Street – Suite 2400. The Taskforce is tasked to study and report on alternative governance models for operating Jackson’s Public Health Trust.
On January 20th, a resolution was passed sponsored by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa establishing the Miami-Dade County Hospital Governance Taskforce. This taskforce will bring together a 20-member team, many of which are experts in the healthcare administration field. They will advise the Board of County Commissioners as to what alternative hospital governance models exist across the nation, which may benefit and provide the changes needed to solve Jackson’s current struggles.
Commissioner Sosa stated that she believes it is crucial to have a much broader perspective in governance models and to have the opportunity to consider any possible long-term solutions for Jackson. The Commissioner is hopeful that this taskforce will be able to advise the Board of County Commissioners on how to find a cure for the Jackson Hospital’s governance difficulties and financial woes.
“We’re looking at a domino effect if we allow our safety net hospital to continue a downward spiral,” said Commissioner Sosa. “If Jackson Memorial Hospital is forced to reduce the number of indigent patients it treats, this will trickle down and overwhelm private hospitals as well. The County needs to look at other models across the country for solutions in addressing the financial hardships facing Jackson.”
