Miami-Dade County to honor Dr. Richard Zakheim, founder of Miami Children's Hospital Cardiology Department
(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade Commission Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa will present a Proclamation honoring Dr. Richard Zakheim, founder of Miami Children’s Hospital’s Cardiology Department, on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. during the Board of County Commissioners’ meeting in the Commission Chamber of the Stephen P. Clark Center.
Dr. Zakheim moved to Miami in 1977 and founded the Pediatric Cardiology Department at Miami Children’s Hospital. Serving as its director until 2002, Dr. Zakheim and his staff led the pediatric cardiology division to become a world leader in the care of children with congenital heart disorders. The hospital has treated more children with heart defects than any hospital in Florida and its clinical results have been internationally recognized.
Paul B. Hernandez, City of Hialeah Councilman and former cardiac patient, will join Chairwoman Sosa in commending Dr. Zakheim for his lifetime commitment to saving lives and his contributions to our community. After his own cancer diagnosis and treatments, Dr. Zakheim helped his wife, Pamela, opened The Wellness Community-Greater Miami in 1999, now known as the Cancer Support Community Greater Miami. Additionally, Dr. Zakheim founded the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic at Miami Children’s Hospital in 2006, where he still provides follow-up and treatment for adults with heart disease.
