Miami-Dade County launches fundraising campaign to support local pediatric cancer research

MIAMI (September 4, 2015) – On Tuesday, September 8th at noon, Commissioner Rebeca Sosa will be joined by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, Chairman Jean Monestime, and the Board of County Commissioners to announce the launch of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the online employee fundraising campaign, “Be Bold. Be Gold.” in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, located at 111 NW 1 Street, Miami.

“When I think about Bella and the challenges endured by so many children whose lives are cut short by pediatric cancer, I become inspired to do my small part to help find a cure for this disease and ease some of the pain felt by countless families throughout Miami-Dade County,” said Commissioner Sosa.

“Miami-Dade County is making it easier for its employees to contribute to pediatric cancer research. If we all come together, a cure may someday be available,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.

In a fight against pediatric cancer, the leading cause of disease related death among children and adolescents in the United States, Monday’s press conference will mark the official launch of a fundraising program sponsored by Commissioner Sosa, approved by the Board of County Commissioners, and implemented by the administration through which Miami-Dade County employees may donate to pediatric cancer research.

Federal and private funding for pediatric cancer research remains scarce even though the need is great. Over the past 20 years, there has only been one drug approved specifically for pediatric cancer in the United States.

“I am proud to sponsor this County initiative and thank the many people in our community who have already stepped forward supporting the efforts to find better treatment for pediatric cancer patients,” concluded Commissioner Sosa

Join Commissioner Sosa and Mayor Gimenez on Monday to learn how this joint fundraising effort among three leading local children’s hospitals will support pediatric cancer research.
