(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- At several recent Miami-Dade County Commission meetings, Commissioner Rebeca Sosa supported legislation to continue the County’s Community Periodical Advertising Program. The program was created in 1993 to ensure that residents who could not afford mainstream newspapers would also be able to learn of County meetings and events via advertisements in free community newspapers. During the budget process for the County’s new fiscal year, administration debated as to whether this program should be continued.
“For many residents in my district, and I’m sure in all of Miami-Dade, the local community paper is their lifeline as to what’s going on in County government,” said Commissioner Sosa. “The publications currently part of the program have helped Miami-Dade spread the word on important initiatives, like our recycling program, consumer services, and more. It’s important that the County keeps this line of communication open with residents through the Periodicals Program.”
The Commission ultimately decided to maintain the program as it was on December 17, 2009, ensuring a free source of information for residents and revenue for community newspapers supported largely by advertising.
