(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Commissioner Rebeca Sosa was presented with the Lollipop Award by "Amigos For Kids" for her steadfast support and commitment to keeping the children in our community safe. The Lollipop Award was instituted to honor the memory of Lázaro Figueroa, "Baby Lollipop", whose tragic and brutal death at the hands of his own mother shook South Florida back in 1990 and raised awareness of the importance of advocacy for the victims of child abuse. The presentation took part during the First Annual Celebration of Friendship Luncheon on Saturday, April 30, 2011, in the Coral Gables Country Club.
Commissioner Sosa accepted the award on behalf of all the children that have died victims of child abuse and reaffirmed her commitment to continue supporting the fight against child abuse and neglect, as there is no excuse for children to suffer acts of cruelty. The Commissioner also commended Jorge Plasencia, Founder of Amigos For Kids and its president Rosa Maria Plasencia for their dedication to Amigos For Kids.
The event highlighted Amigos For Kids daily strive to create awareness and prevent child abuse through their There's NO Excuse For Child Abuse! ® message. The luncheon celebrated years of friendship and support of the organization, and emphasized the crucial commitment and need for the entire community to help continue creating awareness and taking all measures to help prevent child abuse.
