Commissioner Rebeca Sosa pushes for stronger laws against assault and battery of airline pilots, vessel captains and crew members

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Aware of the importance of air travel safety and in the midst of the tenth anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Commissioner Sosa presented a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to pass legislation imposing enhanced penalties for assault and battery of airline pilots, vessel captains, and their respective crews. The Miami-Dade Commission passed the item during the September 1, 2011 meeting.

"The Florida Legislature should impose increased prison sentences and fines related to crimes against airline pilots, flight attendants and other flight crew members, as well as vessel captains and crew," stated Commissioner Sosa. "Especially in light of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, pilots, flight attendants and other flight crew members serve a vital role in national security, as do vessel captains and crew."

The Clerk of the Board will transmit a certified copy of Commissioner Sosa's resolution to the Governor, Senate President, House Speaker and the Chair and Members of the Miami-Dade State Legislative Delegation. The resolution also directs the County's federal lobbyists to advocate for the passage of the legislation, and authorizes and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to include this item in the 2012 State Legislative Package to include these items.
