Keeping sexual predators from using drones to photograph minors

(MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL) – Today, County Commissioners unanimously backed criminalizing the use of drones by sexual predators to record children.

The resolution, sponsored by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, supports Florida Senate Bill 510 or similar legislation that would impose criminal penalties on convicted sexual offenders caught using drones to capture or transmit images of children in public and private places. Currently, both the state and county prohibit these individuals from going near areas where children normally congregate. In keeping with these measures, this initiative seeks to further restrict an offender’s ability to commit predatory activity.

“We must continue to adapt with the times,” said Commissioner Sosa. “My main priority is the safety and wellbeing of our community and especially our children. Drones can do a lot of good, but we must take every precaution to make sure they aren’t used by people for criminal and despicable purposes.”
