Commissioner Rebeca Sosa leads the charge against higher energy costs

Today, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution, sponsored by Commissioner Sosa, opposing Florida Power & Light’s (FPL) proposed rate increase.

FPL recently filed a request with the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to enact a rate hike that would be phased in over the next four years. The increase, as per FPL, is needed to improve the system, reduce carbon emissions, and cover the costs of building a natural gas-fired power plant in Okeechobee County. While FPL has made significant headway towards reducing emissions, the rate hike would disproportionately affect Miami-Dade County residents as they make up nearly 20 percent of its customer base.

“Our economy is still in the process of recovering, and a rise in rates would not only hurt those struggling, but would also negatively impact our businesses, schools, and local governments.” Said Commissioner Sosa. “It is my hope that the PSC and FPL can work out a solution that truly benefits our community.”
