(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Today the Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution designating the first week of May “Child Safety Week.” This campaign is intended to raise awareness, education, and enforcement components that will educate the community with respect to the current law and safe practices.
Children and adults in Miami-Dade County and around the nation have been injured or killed when not in child car seats, when placed in car seats improperly, or not wearing their seat belts while riding in vehicles. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Injury Prevention (CDC), there were more than 1,450 deaths and approximately 203,000 injured from motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2005 among children aged 14 years and younger. Nearly half of those killed were not wearing any type of restraint.
“This campaign’s goal is to reduce the number and severity of accidents in Miami-Dade County,” said Commissioner Gimenez. “We need to be as proactive as possible to prevent tragedies on our roadways.”
