Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez urges drivers to learn more about safety programs and driver’s license requirements

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez is urging Miami-Dade County residents to participate in programs created by Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and learn about new requirements for obtaining a driver's license.
FLHSMV has added a "Safety First" section to its website (www.flhsmv.gov/SafetyTips/) with constantly updated information about driver-related safety. Identity theft, school bus safety, road rage and adverse weather conditions are just a few of the topics included on the site. The department also urges anyone with a valid driver's license or identification card to register in the Emergency Contact Information system by visiting www.flhsmv.gov. This program allows drivers to input contact information of a family member or friend in a database so that law enforcement can reach them in the event the driver is in an emergency situation.

A new website for teen drivers has also been created by FLHSMV - www.takethewheel.net. According to the site, 37,000 teen drivers (ages 15-19) in Florida were involved in crashes in 2006. Take the Wheel challenges young drivers to take charge and offers tips on how to be a more responsible driver.  Vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among U.S teens.

FLHSMV has also partnered with American Express to promote the use of credit cards in their offices and to provide car seats to needy children.  From October 31 to December 31, 2008, for each American Express transaction completed at driver licenses offices in Florida, American Express will donate 50 cents to the Florida Highway Patrol Advisory Council towards supplying car seats for children in need, up to $10,000.  MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards are now accepted at driver licenses offices in Florida.

Changes have also been made to the process of renewing or replacing driver's licenses. Beginning no later than January 1, 2010, all Florida driver licenses offices will begin issuing "Real IDs" to curb identity theft. Drivers will no longer be able to have licenses reissued online and will have to go to a driver license office in person with a copy of their Social Security card and another form of identification, depending on whether one is a U.S. citizen, or non-citizen. More information can be found online at http://www.flhsmv.gov/realid/.

However, drivers can still make their appointments online at http://www.flhsmv.gov/oasis to attend their nearest office. By logging on to FLHSMV's site, drivers can look at license and identification card fees (which have recently changed) and download applicable forms to fill out before their trip to the driver license office for their convenience.
