Commissioner Sorenson, representing District 8 since 1994, has been an outspoken advocate for her community and all of Miami-Dade County. Commissioner Sorenson has worked diligently to enhance the quality of life for South Miami-Dade through wise economic and growth management policies, crime prevention initiatives, and protection of the region’s environmental resources. She has also been a staunch advocate for human rights, a champion of regional cooperation, a leader in child welfare issues, and a promoter of the arts.

Commissioner Katy Sorenson unveiled “Joseph Allen Fielder Avenue” in honor of Homestead Air Reserve Base’s former Chief of Base Operations. The new street co-designation includes a portion of SW 122 Avenue from SW 232 Street to SW 236 Street.

Commissioner Katy Sorenson was unanimously elected the Secretary of the South Florida Regional Planning Council by its members.

Miami-Dade County Chairman Dennis C. Moss and Commissioner Katy Sorenson co-sponsored the unveiling of a rendition of the Haitian Memorial Monument, located in Savannah, Georgia, at the Deering Estate at Cutler in Palmetto Bay.

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson asking the Mayor to sign a “green jobs” pledge and work to make well-paying, environmentally sustainable jobs a centerpiece of the County’s economic development strategy. 

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Chairman Dennis C. Moss and members of the Board of County Commissioners, together with the Citizens Independent Transportation Trust and Florida Department of Transportation broke ground on the 2.4-mile Metrorail extension from the Earlington Heights station to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC), which is under construction next to Miami International Airport.

More than 200 people attended Commissioner Sorenson’s Small Business Assistance Workshop to seek help for their businesses in order to stay afloat during the economic downturn.  

Commissioner Katy Sorenson requested a deferral of the County’s plan to purchase the property on the Northwest corner of SW 87 Avenue and 112 Street and requested that new appraisals be worked up for the property. The move saved the County $1 million.
