(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Small business owners looking to get ahead in a rough economy may find the help they need at Commissioner Katy Sorenson's Small Business Assistance Workshop. The free event will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center, 11155 SW 112 Avenue, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Commissioner will be introducing speakers from six organizations with information on how to keep your business going strong:
- U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA): To discuss the SBA's role in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, containing a package of loan fee reductions, higher guarantees, new SBA programs and secondary market incentives that will help unlock credit markets and begin economic recovery for the nation's small business sector.
- Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Miami-Dade: A member of the Florida SBDC Network, funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. SBDC offers free of charge personalized, confidential one-on-one counseling to established and start-up businesses.
- South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC): To discuss Revolving Loan Program for small- to medium-size businesses, with loans between $50,000 and $300,000.
- South Florida Workforce: To discuss training and opportunities available to small businesses.
- SCORE Miami Dade Chapter 29: A national organization (division of U.S. Small Business Administration) comprised of volunteer counselors (working, retired executives, and business owners) who provide free mentoring advice (on-line and in-person) as well as low-cost workshops and seminars.
- ACCIÓN USA: As a leader in U.S. microfinance, ACCIÓN USA empowers business owners with access to capital and financial education.
- Tabletop Exhibits/One-on-One counseling for participants will be available after the presentations.
Commissioner Sorenson organized the workshop to address the overwhelming response of constituents and small business owners who are looking for relief to keep their businesses afloat during the recession. "I want to make as much information as possible available to small business owners in our community," said Commissioner Sorenson. "There are resources available that might help them through these very trying times."
