Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava goes grocery shopping while living on minimum wage

Miami, Fla. – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava will go grocery shopping while living on minimum wage for five days to demonstrate the difficult choices low wage workers have to make each day while trying to stretch just $17 a day for all of their basic needs, including food.

“While I volunteered to take on this challenge, minimum wage workers in Miami-Dade County do not have this choice. Their challenge does not end after five days and more often than not, they must make heartbreaking decisions in order to survive. Sometimes, this means foregoing necessities such as healthcare just to put food on the table for their families. That’s why I stand with raising the wage: because no one who works full time should have to live in poverty,” said Commissioner Levine Cava.

The Commissioner began the minimum wage challenge on October 12 and will have just $85 for transit, food and other basic expenses until October 17th.
