County sets standards for Sustainable Development
On December 4, 2007, the County Commission unanimously adopted the
Implementing Order that establishes the sustainability standards that
the County will be following for its green building program. The County
has committed to build to the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standard. The LEED
standards range from “Certified” to Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The

Green Building requirements proposed by Commissioner Katy Sorenson
added to Building Better Communities Program
Today the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously
approved an Ordinance proposed by Commissioner Katy Sorenson that
extends the County’s green building ordinance to construction
projects done by municipalities on behalf of the County.
“Sustainable building is great environmental and fiscal policy,”
explained Commissioner Sorenson. “A number of studies have shown
that green building requires relatively little up-front investment
while providing a significant financial return through reduced
operating costs.” |

Commissioner Sorenson works to enforce greater access for the
disabled
Commissioner Katy Sorenson sponsored an ordinance increasing the
protection for disabled access within Miami-Dade County. The fine
for blocking access aisles will now be $150.
“We needed to expand our idea of access. It isn’t enough to ticket
people for parking in disabled spots—we need to protect the entire
system of access for our disabled residents. This ordinance allows
us to do that,” Commissioner Sorenson said. |

Commissioner Sorenson cheers passage of farmland preservation
program
The Miami-Dade County Commission, at the urging of Commissioner Katy
Sorenson, gave approval to a new County program that will help
farmers stay farming and protect agricultural land from
development. The program was included as part of the “Building
Better Communities” bond plan that was approved by voters in 2004.
Now the County will work with willing farmers to draw up
conservation easements that will protect eligible properties from
development for at least 25 years. The County will offer to
purchase the agricultural business’ available development rights in
exchange for the guarantee that the land cannot be used for anything
other than farming. |
