Commissioner Sorenson seeks renewable energy legislation
On February 5th, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a series of resolutions sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson calling on the Florida Legislature and the Public Service Commission to advance renewable energy in our state.  “Alternative energy technology presents many fantastic opportunities for Miami-Dade County,” explained Commissioner Sorenson.  “We can become national leaders in the field of clean energy technology with the right set of incentives from the State of Florida.”

Commissioner Sorenson and the Board of County Commissioners are encouraging the Public Service Commission (PSC) to adopt the draft rules for “net metering” proposed by the PSC. Additionally, the County will ask the Legislature to pass an alternative energy property tax exemption called for in the Florida Constitution, enhance the County's low-income solar program, and include renewable energy in the venture capital "Florida Opportunity Fund."

Commissioner Sorenson, Mayor Alvarez, Commissioner Moss, and Miami-Dade Transit participate in the South Miami-Dade Busway Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Commissioner Katy Sorenson participated in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Segment II of the South Miami-Dade Busway Extension this past December.  The completed busway is the longest of it's kind in the United States.  "Rapid transit service from Florida City to Dadeland will provide the residents of our communities a convenient alternative to the automobile," said Sorenson.  "Miami-Dade Transit is adding new park-and-ride lots to serve transit riders, and at my request, is researching circulator routes to better serve the South Dade community too."

Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day
The Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day is a great opportunity to give back to the environment.  Commissioner Sorenson will join hundreds of volunteers at Black Point Marina for the event.  "The Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day is an opportunity to help clean up the debris from careless littering and from trash washed through stormwater into the bay." offered Sorenson.  "The event helps connect our actions to our environment."  Registration deadline for the Countywide event, which typically draws 6000 to 7000 volunteers, is April 4th.  Register now at: www.miamidade.gov/derm/baynanza.asp

Final Vote to hold the Urban Development Boundary in April
A majority of County Commissioners voted to override objections from the County's Planning staff and preliminarily adopt changes in the County's master plan that would move the urban development boundary (UDB) further west for a big-box hardware chain, office buildings, and more residential suburban sprawl.  Those applications will be reviewed by the State of Florida and returned to Miami-Dade County for a final vote April 24th.

Commissioner Sorenson continues to fight for good urban planning, which means holding the urban development boundary in place, directing infrastructure investments into the urban core, pushing for pedestrian friendly, mass transit centered infill development instead of perpetuating gridlock-inducing suburban sprawl.  "The developers said last time that we needed to expand the UDB because there was no land left, and that it was the only way to build affordable housing," said Sorenson.  "They don't have that excuse this time, so why push for more development in farmland and wetlands?"

Commissioner Sorenson urges residents to make their voices heard, by calling or emailing their County Commissioner, or in person at the upcoming Comprehensive Development Master Plan hearing (CDMP) this April 24th.

Commissioner Katy Sorenson, Miami-Dade Park and Recreation, and local residents dedicate the newly developed Rock Ridge Park
Commissioner Katy Sorenson and representatives of Miami-Dade Park and Recreation and local residents celebrated the completion of Rock Ridge Park (10810 S.W. 117 Avenue, Miami, FL) with a dedication ceremony on Friday, December 7, 2007.

Rock Ridge Park is a 4.5-acre facility with lots of open space for families to enjoy and an ADA-accessible playground.  A shade/rain shelter will be built in the coming months.  The park, located on land that was originally a rock quarrying site, cost $1.278 million: $1.1 million from Impact Fees and $275,000 from Commissioner Sorenson's Quality Neighborhoods Improvement Program (QNIP) funds.

Commissioner Katy Sorenson sponsors mortgage foreclosure prevention workshop
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson gathered a group of finance and mortgage professionals to help the residents in her community battle threats of foreclosure. While the number of foreclosures in Florida increased 50 percent in the last fiscal quarter, homeowners are often unaware of their options if they have difficulty paying their mortgage. Commissioner Sorenson held a Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Workshop on January 31, 2008 to assist residents facing foreclosure or who are having financial difficulties.

The workshop was presented in conjunction with Neighborhood Housing Services, an organization committed to educating homebuyers and homeowners
