Commissioner Katy Sorenson calls for energy efficiency strategy for County operations
Commissioner Sorenson sponsored and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution on March 3rd that calls for the Mayor to develop a plan to cut electrical demand from County operations by 20% within 5 years. The plan to be presented back to the Board in 90 days, is expected to include a number of aggressive energy conservation strategies. Among the strategies expected to be included in that plan are: that the County purchase only Energy Star qualified products when available, deploy renewable energy projects, conduct energy audits and improve existing county buildings, and develop an energy efficiency educational campaign for County employees. “Energy efficiency projects have tremendous economic and social benefits for our community,” offered Commissioner Sorenson. “Setting an aggressive goal to save energy also saves the County money while making better use of scarce resources, and during this time of economic difficulty, can also create jobs while making our buildings more efficient.” |

Miami-Dade County gets new lease for Ron Ehmann Park
Commissioner Sorenson applauded the approval of a lease agreement with Miami-Dade Public Schools for the continued use of Ron Ehmann Park. The Killian area park had recently been considered as a possible site for a middle school expansion, but that plan met significant opposition from the neighborhood around Ron Ehmann Park. Commissioner Sorenson met with community members to discuss issues with the park as well as traffic concerns generated by activities there and from neighboring Killian Senior High School. “It is great to see so many people rally around their community park,” said Commissioner Sorenson. “Ron Ehmann is a very popular park in the Kendall area, so I’m glad that we were able to work out a new long-term lease for the facility.”

Commissioner Katy Sorenson wins approval to dedicate "Charles Burr Park" in South Miami-Dade
On November 20, Commissioner Katy Sorenson won approval by the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners for a resolution she sponsored naming Rock Pit No. 77, located at 20150 SW 127 Avenue, as “Charles Burr Park” to honor one of the county’s agricultural pioneers.
Charles Raymond Burr was born in 1922 at what is now known as Burr’s Strawberry Farm in the Redland, where his parents settled. Burr is best known as the “Strawberry King” due to the popularity of his strawberry crop, first planted in 1960. He honed his farming skills by attending agricultural courses from the University of Florida that were offered at a local Redland school. Burr eventually developed methods of irrigation to conserve water, like the drip tube irrigation system, that proved instrumental to agriculture. |
