Commissioner Sorenson organized the event after her office had received an overwhelming amount of inquiries from business owners regarding how to stay afloat during the economic downturn. Unveiling of the South Dade Government Center’s new building improvements and expanded County Services
Commissioner Katy Sorenson, in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Alvarez, Chairman Dennis C. Moss, Town of Cutler Bay Mayor Paul Vrooman, unveiled a plaque dedicating South Dade Government Center’s new exterior elevators and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Plaza Improvements on Friday, March 6, 2009. The South Dade Government Center (SDGC) includes the district offices for Chairman Moss and Commissioner Sorenson and serves as a multifunctional facility utilized by South Dade residents and County employees. The much-needed improvements were thanks in part to Alina N. Rios, the ADA Construction Manager who supervised the project. Rios passed away on April 18, 2008 before construction at SDGC was completed. To honor her memory, the plaque includes Rios’s name. Her husband, Raul Rios and family were present for the ceremony.

Be prepared for another Hurricane Season
Hurricane Season runs from June 1, 2009 to November 30, 2009 and Commissioner Katy Sorenson wants everyone to be prepared in case of a hurricane threat in Miami-Dade County. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters are predicting that a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season is most likely this year. However, as with any season, the need to prepare for the possibility of a storm striking near you is essential. Miami-Dade County has some useful tools that will help you prepare and keep you informed, such as our free Hurricane Guide and Miami-Dade Alerts. Anyone can register for our free Miami-Dade Alerts, a wireless emergency alerting system, to receive, free local weather and hurricane alerts.

Miami-Dade County saves $1 million on purchase of Killian Park & library site
In December 2008, Commissioner Katy Sorenson requested a deferral of the County’s plan to purchase the property on the Northwest corner of SW 87 Avenue and 112 Street and requested that new appraisals be worked up for the property. The move saved the County $1 million. “I have a responsibility to my constituents and the whole County to be a good steward of their tax dollars,” explained Commissioner Sorenson, who is chair of the Budget, Planning and Sustainability Committee. “The creation of a community park and library at this site will enhance the quality of life in the Killian area, but the property had to be a good deal for the County too.” The Miami-Dade County Commission approved the purchase of the property and use as a library and park. The Library and Park will be built to the County’s green building standards and the two agencies have collaborated to incorporate the park and library space through the inclusion of “story time canopies” and by integrating the design so that the two uses are mutually supportive.

GREEN FACT

About 90% of the energy used by your washing machine goes to heat the water. For most loads of laundry, a cold wash will suffice. There are really only two occasions when hot should be used: to remove some tough stains & when washing bed linens. By using cold instead of hot water when washing laundry, you can save upwards of $300 and 330 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
