Commissioner Sorenson Discusses Alternative Energy Efforts at FIU Panel
Commissioner Katy Sorenson discussed the County’s efforts to become more sustainable at a forum hosted by Florida International University on March 30th. “Counties and Cities have been the leaders in bringing green building, hybrid vehicles, solar power and other alternative energy options closer to the mainstream,” explained Commissioner Sorenson. “Miami-Dade now operates one of the largest government fleets of hybrid vehicles in the country, has adopted a progressive green building requirement for government buildings and provides incentives for commercial projects to go green. We’ve created tax incentives for the solar energy industry and are helping our farmers to explore potential biofuel crops.”

Commissioner Sorenson and BaynanzaVolunteers Clean up Chapman Field Park
Commissioner Katy Sorenson joined about one hundred community volunteers who dedicated their time on Saturday, April 14th, cleaning up wayward trash at Chapman Field Park as part of Miami-Dade County’s Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup. “This is such a great event because it helps connect our actions to consequences,” explained Commissioner Sorenson. “The litter that we find at these cleanup sites gets washed off our streets and into canals and storm drains.”
Construction Begins at South Dade Park's Pool for a New Family Splash Playground
Kids will soon enjoy a new splash playground with interactive spray features at the Family Aquatic Center at South Dade Park. Commissioner Sorenson calls for a Fuel Crop Study and "Green Fleet" Plan
Today the Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson that directs the Miami-Dade agricultural manager to research and develop opportunities to grow fuel crops- agricultural products grown to produce ethanol or biodiesel- here in Miami Dade. While corn is the tropical crop associated with ethanol, several crops more readily grown locally show much higher potential for use in making ethanol fuel than corn.
