Crime Down 35 Percent in District 8
A
recent report prepared by the Miami-Dade Police Department shows a
significant decline in crime in District 8. Between April 2006 and May 2006
crime in the district has dropped over 35 percent.
Commissioner Sorenson Recognized for Work on Property
Tax Relief
Commissioner Katy Sorenson was awarded the 2006 Presidential Advocacy Award
by the Florida Association of Counties at the July 6 Board of County
Commissioners meeting. Chris Holley, the Executive Director of the Florida
Association of Counties, praised Commissioner Sorenson for her work with the
organization, specifically for her advocacy on behalf of the portable
property tax for seniors.
Commissioner Sorenson Joins Volunteers
Repainting Community Wall
On Saturday July 8th, Commissioner Katy Sorenson
joined community volunteers from the Devonaire neighborhood Crime Watch,
Team Metro Kendall, Miami-Dade Police Kendall District, and Police Explorers
Post 907 in repainting a large community wall along southwest 120 Street.
The project was funded in part by a Community Image Grant program started by
Commissioner Sorenson.
Jackie Acosta, who heads the
Devonaire Crime Watch, organized the event to repaint the graffiti impacted
wall. “The turnout was fantastic,” remarked Commissioner Sorenson. “There
were so many volunteers that came to help out that they had the entire wall
painted twice and bags of litter picked up within a couple short hours.”
Palmetto Bay Library Goes 'Green' Thanks to Commissioner Sorenson
Commissioner Katy Sorenson has been working to bring
sustainable building design, often referred to as "green building," to
county projects and to private developments. Her most recent contribution
was to grant funds to the Village of Palmetto Bay to "green" the new
library being planned for construction along Village-owned waterfront
property on Old Cutler Road.
Commissioner Katy Sorenson Attends Groundbreaking for
Affordable Homes in Homestead
County
Commissioner Katy Sorenson, along with City of Homestead Mayor Roscoe
Warren, helped break ground on a project to build eight affordable houses
within the City of Homestead. The event was also attended by
representatives from Commissioner Dennis Moss’s office, Sylvia Unzueta,
director of the Office of Community and Economic Development, as well as
Homestead City Council Members, staff from the City of Homestead, and staff
from Neighborhood Housing Services.
