(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- In December 2008, Commissioner Katy Sorenson requested a deferral of the County’s plan to purchase the property on the Northwest corner of SW 87 Avenue and 112 Street and requested that new appraisals be worked up for the property. The move saved the County $1 million. “I have a responsibility to my constituents and the whole County to be a good steward of their tax dollars,” explained Commissioner Sorenson. “The creation of a community park and library at this site will certainly enhance the quality of life in the Killian area, but the property had to be a good deal for the County too.” The Miami-Dade County Commission approved the purchase of the property and use as a library and park at their meeting today.
The Killian library project is part of the Building Better Communities bond approved by the voters in 2004. The County had evaluated a number of possible sites for this library and park, including the “paint test site” identified by the community participating in the East Kendall charrette, but County administrators eventually decided that the final location approved today was the best option with the least number of barriers to the creation of the civic space. The Library and Park will be built to the County’s green building standards and the two agencies have collaborated to incorporate the park and library space through the inclusion of “story time canopies” and by integrating the design so that the two uses are mutually supportive. Although the Killian Park and Library project is not expected to begin for several years, Commissioner Sorenson has asked the Departments involved to clean up the site and make the property available for use as a passive park as soon as possible.
