(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- On June 2, 2009, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Katy Sorenson asking the Mayor to sign a “green jobs” pledge and work to make well-paying, environmentally sustainable jobs a centerpiece of the County’s economic development strategy. “As we look to diversify and strengthen Miami-Dade’s economy and mobilize our community to dramatically reduce our impact on the climate, green collar jobs must be our focus,” said Commissioner Sorenson. “We have been moving in that direction through programs within the County already, but now is the time to engage the entire community on ways to create green jobs.”
The County’s Climate Change Advisory Task Force recommended supporting the “Local Government Green Jobs Pledge” sponsored by Green for All, a national organization advocating for the development of a green economy that is inclusive and helps to improve the conditions of economically disadvantaged communities. Van Jones, the founder of Green For All, is currently the Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. “Miami-Dade County has long been a local leader on the issue of climate change,” said Sorenson. “The next logical step for our community is to promote those industries that will help our economy while also helping the nation tackle the problem of human induced climate change.”
